June 2021

It is a long time since I wrote anything on this website.  The apple trees in our garden are still growing, some better than others.  The 50 year old James Grieve is full of aphids and some canker and is still there because it holds up a late flowering clematis, however, the blue tits have been very busy collecting food for the young birds in the nest boxes.  It looks as if we will have a better apple crop than last year.

I visited a recently planted cider orchard yesterday, some of the trees have been very badly hit by aphids with the leaves curled up and brown.  When I got home I asked Dave and he said we have a lot of greenfly this year and some years it is worse than others.  Has anyone else found that aphids are more of a pest in some years than others?
